April Photo Dump

April has been mostly a catch up and get things done kind of month, so I don’t have any kind of theme for the latest post. Instead, you’re getting some of my favorite photos from the month.

Birds & Blooms

Very bright red flowers
Indian (Texas) Paintbrush. This is popping up all over the ranch.
Small purple and white ground flowers
Ground plum. The fruit is edible, but the part in the guides that say “similar-looking species are completely poisonous” makes me think we shouldn’t try them.
A small sparrow on a branch
Savannah sparrow. A common bird, but a nice pose.

Ranch Cats

Two young cats, one pastel calico and the other striped gray.
As yet unnamed barn cats—we aren’t sure they’ll be staying. Super sweet cats that were dumped at the ranch.
A man (me!) driving a UTV with a cat on his lap.
The gray kitty loves to go for rides in the UTV.
A gray cat standing on the driver's seat of a UTV.
If I’m not ready to go, he’ll let me know I need to hurry up.

The House

A manufactured home with lumber stacked in front.
Our new deck! Some assembly required. Unfortunately, our builder came down with the measles right after this was delivered.

The New Lake

A flooded pasture.
The rains at the end of April flooded the lake bottom. The house stayed dry—we got almost 18 inches of rain in April!

Cows & Horses

A woman gardening with a white horse standing near.
We let Spot into the yard to graze, and he’s seeing if Julie is planting anything good.
A white horse rubbing its nose on birdfeeders.
He’s old. He doesn’t know he’s not a bird.
A horse and woman selfie.
One of the other horses wanted to get in on the fun.
A smiling calf next to a woman with two cats on her lap.
This is Bugsy., a very energetic and happy calf. She likes to lick the new barn cats. And us.

Final Notes

Ranch life definitely has its hard moments—like when we lost an abandoned calf that Julie had been caring for. It’s never easy. But it’s all part of the life we’ve chosen, and we wouldn’t trade it for anything.

We love it here, and life continues to be good.

Keep in touch—we’d love to hear from you!

  1. […] of you who know me know that I was more excited to find a batch of new kittens. I mentioned on my last post that some cats were dumped at the ranch, and one of them was pregnant. We knew she had given birth […]
